Burnout syndrome

  • Concept burnout syndrome with a business woman feeling uncomfortable working; which is caused by stress, accumulated from unsuccessful work and not enough rest.

Workplace stress is becoming an increasingly alarming global problem.

According to the State of the Global Workplace 2024 report prepared by Gallup in more than 160 countries, it highlights that employees in the Middle East and North Africa report the highest levels of daily stress globally (52%), followed by those in Latin America and the Caribbean (44%) and Europe (37%). In addition, the report indicates that well-being among workers under 35 years of age fell from 35% to 31%.

“You feel that something doesn't fit, that your body and mind are suffering. Burnout is the visible face of chronic stress, it is its physical and mental symptom. In medicine we could call it chronic stress syndrome” says the Spanish psychiatrist, Carlos Cenalmor in his book El síndrome del burnout (Burnout syndrome), “Simply put, your body is reacting in a very logical way to a lifestyle and a way of working that is not logical at all, but unnatural. Burnout syndrome, the silent pandemic of the 21st century, is the consequence of the excessive stress we endure day after day, which ultimately leads to illness.”

“To get out of burnout you have to make decisions,” says Cenalmor, who also recommends, first of all, always communicating what is happening: “to human resources, your manager, director or whoever is above you. You are not a weak link in a perfect chain but a normal human being in a system. And if you are self-employed or an entrepreneur, communicate it to yourself. Sit in front of a mirror and be honest about how you are feeling.”

Through his personal experience and his knowledge as an expert, the author presents the CIMA method, designed to fight against job burnout. Through exercises, anecdotes and real cases, the keys to maintaining health and recovering energy are finally reached after a period of emotional crisis at work.

The writer Sari Arponen, author of It's the Microbiota, Idiot!, comments in the prologue: “This book is very necessary. I hope that many people read it and discover what is happening to them and, with them, follow the path to reconnect with life, with eternal summer, with happiness and well-being.”

Carlos Cenalmor is a doctor, psychiatrist and psychotherapist. His way of working is through a comprehensive approach to the person. After growing up in Madrid and training at the best universities and hospitals, he suffered a major episode of stress and burnout that marked a before and after in his career. For this reason, he decided to change his life and moved to a valley in the mountains, in the Pyrenees. From there, through a free newsletter, which he sends daily to his entire previously registered community (more than 10,000), he shares tools, inspiring stories and reflections on burnout. “To help you live with more balance between personal and professional life,” he says.

“My email is directed only to people who want to be productive and happy at the same time. To achieve something that they deserve, that you deserve. Getting up every morning without feeling discouraged about having to go to work, increasing your productivity even by working less time, staying calm in moments of high pressure and demand.”
